Community resources
There’s still time to sign up for one of Austin Bat Cave’s summer camps! We have all sorts of fun activities for your young writers, including our Nature Journaling camp coming up next week! In this workshop, campers will use writing and drawing to capture inspiration from the great outdoors and its many mysteries! Through nature walks and field trips, students will observe animals, plants, and other natural phenomena and create poems, stories, and illustrations to express the natural wonder they experience. Students will also learn about journaling and mindfulness and ways in which nature can help us better understand ourselves. Register here to reserve your child’s spot!
Throughout the summer, Austin public libraries have events, like crafts or storytime, almost every day! Check them out here. If you live in Del Valle, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Marcos, or Cedar Park, their public libraries also have wonderful summer programs for families and community members of all ages!
A local bookstore called Bookpeople has some fun events and activities for kids, from author talks to book clubs. Check them out here!

ABC Camp Highlights
This week, youth in the Folktalks and Folklore program with the San Marcos Library were asked to write in response to the following prompt: A scientist has created something in her lab, but now it has escaped and she is fleeing from it. What/who is she fleeing from and what happens next?

Writing Activities to try at home this week

Monday: Create your own new ice cream flavor and describe it. If you want, you can draw a picture to go along with it!

Tuesday: Write about what it would be like if you had an alligator as a pet.

Friday: If you were a mythical creature, what would you be? A dragon? A fairy? You can write a story about you as that creature.

Saturday: Write about going into outer space and finding a new planet. What would you name the planet? Are there aliens there?

What we’re reading this week
This week’s recommendation is The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen. When a circus ship runs aground off the coast of Maine, the poor animals are left on their own to swim the chilly waters. Staggering onto a nearby island, they soon win over the wary townspeople with their kind, courageous ways. When the greedy circus owner returns to claim them, villagers of all species conspire to outsmart the man. This fun picture book is in rhyme and is perfect for children ages four to eight.
