Join ABC Pen Pals!
Now more than ever, it is increasingly important to stay connected. While we practice social distancing, seniors in our communities are particularly vulnerable to isolation and loneliness thus impacting their immunity and mental health. Want to know how you can help? Austin Bat Cave's OWL Pen Pal Program connects and matches young people (4th grade +) with senior citizens through a digital pen pal program that fosters meaningful connections between generations. Students will write (and receive) a minimum of two letters. If you want to sign up to become an ABC Youth Pen Pal, register here.

El programa de ser Amigo por Correspondencia de Austin Bat Cave conecta y une a los jóvenes (de 4º grado +) con las personas mayores a través de un programa digital de amigos por correspondencia que fomenta conexiones significativas entre generaciones. Monday (This is a good activity for teens): April is National Poetry Month! Explore some of the poems at Poets.org and choose one that you really like. Spend some time journaling about what your favorite line or image is. Why does this line or image stand out to you? Use that line of the poem or image to create your own new poem. This is how poets share to create something new (be sure to give credit to the poet whose work you used).

Tuesday: Pick a person in your family and interview them. Ask them some important questions (what are their dreams or favorite activities?). Think of questions you’ve always wondered about but just didn’t ask before. Once you have some questions answered, write a paragraph or two describing them as a person. This could be an ongoing project!
Wednesday: What is your favorite animal? Do you know what they do all day? If not, maybe do some research online to see what your favorite animal does daily. After you have an idea of how their day goes, write a short story from the perspective of the animal and write about what you would do today if you were that animal. Include details like what time of day you would wake up, what type of food you would eat, and how you would interact with your animal friends/family. Make the short story at least five sentences.
Thursday: April is a month to honor Earth Day. Write a letter to one of Earth’s main elements. Think of Wind, Fire, Water, Air and of course, Earth: What do you admire about this element? Why? What would you change? What is your favorite example of this element?

Friday: Would you rather have wings and the ability to fly or have gills and the ability to breathe underwater? If you choose wings, what would they look like? Would they be big or small? Where would you fly to? If you chose gills, what would they look like? What kind of aquatic habitat would you explore?

Saturday: Imagine that Austin Bat Cave has a hotel called the Bat Cave Hotel. There are 5 guests staying at the Bat Cave Hotel. Using your imagination, give these individuals some background. Write a short description of who they are and what they are doing there. Maybe one of them is in town for a concert or maybe one of them is in town for a chef competition. Maybe two of them are siblings who are on their way to see an old friend. Be sure to mention if the guests meet one another and become friends during their stay. Get creative!

While listening to the song, journal about some of your favorite lines and explain how it makes you feel or how it is relatable to you. If you’d like, maybe replace some of the lyrics with your own and see how it fits with the music. Have fun with it and focus on what emotions come forward while analyzing one of your favorite songs!

What we are reading this week:
Lo que estamos leyendo esta semana:
This week, our book recommendation is for teen readers and in celebration of Arab-American Heritage Month. Palestinian-American poet Naomi Shihab Nye, a long time supporter of Austin Bat Cave, has written many books for adults, youth, and younger poets. Her latest book, Cast Away: Poems For Our Time, focuses on picking up trash, but also on conservation, immigration, connection and community with others, our responsibility to the planet, and all that we carry and all that we discard. This is a rich, engaging, moving, and sometimes humorous collection for readers ages twelve to adult. If you want to get to know the poet and the book, check out this reading from Naomi Shihab Nye from the book!
