Monday: Since many of us are spending more and more time at home with others, think about the space of your home or apartment. What would happen if a portal opened up in your home? Where would it lead? You can use this story starter: "I stand between two rooms, and suddenly a portal to _________opens up in the wall…”
¿A dónde te llevaría?
Tuesday: Who is your hero right now? Maybe it's someone in your family, a friend, a teacher or someone you don’t know (an actor, a public leader, an author, etc). If you could describe why they are your hero, what would you say? You could write them a letter, make them a thank-you mini-zine (see OWL site for how to make mini-zines) or even make a video message to send to them (ask parents/guardians for help/permission).
Wednesday: What is a movie that you have seen more than once (maybe even this month)? What do you notice each time you watch it? What are your favorite parts?
Thursday: What is something that matters to you very much? Why? Free-write all of the reasons why this matters to you with as much detail as you can.
Friday: If you wrote a disaster movie, what would it be about? What would happen? Write the opening scene (you could even try writing it as a script for your movie or as a comic strip).
Saturday: Describe your room so that someone could draw it from your details. See if someone who doesn’t live with you can draw it based on what you wrote (this is a fun activity to share with friends or family who don’t live with you).
Sunday: What is a typical Sunday like for you? What is something special you could do for yourself today?
What we are reading this week:
Lo que estamos leyendo esta semana:
This week we are recommending a book that is currently on the ABC Magic Bat Bus!
Sarai and the Meaning of Awesome, written by the wonderful author Monica Brown, is about Sarai, a precocious and energetic fourth grader who loves to dance, bake and cares for her friends and family very much. But when Sarai's grandparents are forced to move, even Sarai is not sure what to do. So, she hatches a super-awesome plan with her younger sisters and cousin to buy back the house. But houses are more expensive than she ever thought, her sisters won't listen, and she's running out of time. Read to find out what Sarai decides to do!
The character of Sarai is based off of Sarai Gonzalez, a young activist and the star of viral music video “Soy Yo” by Bomba Estereo. This book can be enjoyed by all, but is most appropriate for readers in 2nd-5th grade. This book is bilingual and is the first in a wonderful series of short chapter books about Sarai and her adventures! Check out the Scholastic website for downloadable/printable activities about the book; you can even download an excerpt from the book in English and Spanish!
