What we are reading this week:
Lo que estamos leyendo esta semana:
We are excited to recommend Dear Martin by Nic Stone this week! Justyce is a strong-willed young black man living a difficult life. He attends a predominately white prep school and is the only Black student. He attends the school using a scholarship but excels in class after class, no matter the circumstances. We learn that he will attend Yale after graduation, but his home life is unstable. His family lives in poverty, and they live among local criminals, he sees racial injustice as part of his family’s narrative. Before graduation, he is stopped by a police officer and panics, but his friend Manny isn’t worried. Justyce realizes that monetary privileges blind even his Black friends from understanding what life is like for him. They are arguing when an undercover police officer murders Manny. He is arrested at school and framed by the police officer who killed Manny. As he awaits trial for first-degree murder, he reads the letters of Martin Luther King. He realizes how the carceral system affects Black men while in jail. Justyce decides to make systematic injustices a preoccupation of his life.
