What we are reading this week:
Lo que estamos leyendo esta semana:
We are excited to recommend The Hate You Give By Angie Thomas this week! This young adult (YA) book follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old girl who lives in a predominantly poor Black neighborhood called Garden Heights, but attends an affluent predominantly white school, Williamson Prep. One weekend, after a shooting breaks up a party she was at, Starr is driven home by her childhood best friend and occasional crush Khalil. They are stopped by a white police officer. The officer instructs Khalil, an African-American young man, to exit the car. When he attempts to lean in and check in on Starr, who is still inside the car, he is shot three times and killed. Khalil’s death makes national headlines, with the media portraying him as a drug dealer and gang member, while painting the white officer in a more favorable light. Starr’s Williamson and Garden Heights personalities become more complicated and she struggles with her identity further when she moves out of Garden Heights. She begins to realize that injustices are worth fighting for and her advocacy can cause change.
