We are excited to recommend Piecing Me Together By Renee Watson this week! This young adult (YA) book is about Jade, a sixteen-year-old African American student attending a predominantly white private school in Portland, Oregon on a scholarship. Taking her mother’s advice, Jade strives to take advantage of every opportunity presented to her. She hoped to be afforded the opportunity to study abroad so she can utilize her Spanish skills, instead Jade is offered a chance to be paired with a mentor in the Women to Women program by her school’s guidance counselor. She is paired with Maxine, initially having high expectations for this mentorship, her hopes are dashed once she realizes Maxine is unreliable and Jade begins to question if it is she or Maxine who is getting guidance from the program. With her art, Jade begins to act on the realization that she needs to make her own opportunities.
