Austin Bat Cave will always stand with and protect trans students. Our workshops are a safe space for all and our programs respect and represent diverse gender identities. We’re always learning how to better serve our partners and community members. Please share suggestions in the comments and we’ll spread the word.

In March we celebrate Women's History Month! This is a wonderful time to honor the lives and accomplishments of all the extraordinary, influential women that have helped shaped our country and our world as well as those that inspire our everyday lives.
For this edition of the OWL Newsletter, we would like to share Austin PBS’ Women’s History Month programming for 2022! Commemorate and celebrate the vital role of women in American history through the month of March by staying tuned to PBS’ television broadcast scheduled to start on Monday, March 14th and conclude on Tuesday, March 29th.

Art For OWL
The Giantess (The Guardian of the Egg) is a painting by British-born Mexican artist, surrealist painting, and novelist, Mary Leonora Carrington. Carrington created The Giantess circa in 1947 after becoming a Mexican resident in 1942. The art piece delves into themes of transformation and metamorphosis while also exploring concepts of femininity.

La Giganta o La Guardiana del Huevo es una pintura de la artista mexicana de origen británico, pintora surrealista y novelista Mary Leonora Carrington. Carrington creó la Giganta alrededor de 1947 después de convertirse en residente mexicana en 1942. Writing activities to try at home this week
Actividades de escritura para usar en casa esta semana
Monday: Write a poem that has the numbers one to nine included in it. They don’t necessarily need to be in order!
Lunes: Escribe un poema que incluya los números del uno al nueve. ¡No tienen que estar en orden necesariamente!
Tuesday: Write a short story from the perspective of a bakery owner that receives three different very interesting customers one day. Make sure to describe what they order!

Wednesday: Write a story set in a world where everyone is assigned a future career at birth.

Poetic Moment
Ada Limón is a Mexican-American poet originally from Sonoma California. She is the author of the poetry collections The Carrying (2018), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry; Bright Dead Things (2015), a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Books Critics Circle Award; Sharks in the Rivers (2010); Lucky Wreck (2006); and This Big Fake World (2006). In her poem “What it Must Have Felt Like” the speaker conveys feelings about being contained by others and what it would feel like to free herself by using bird imagery to symbolize her desired autonomy.

What we are reading this week
We are proud to recommend We’re Going to Find the Monster written by Malorie Blackman and illustrated by Dapo Adeola. In this picture book, two adventurers, Charlie and Eddie, hunt down a mighty monster (their big brother). They encounter wild creatures, hike over mountains, and cross oceans in an adventure that will fill storytime with fun.
