Art For OWL
Ophelia is a painting by British artist Sir Jonh Everet Millais. It was completed between 1851 and 1852 and belongs to the Tate Britain Collection in London. The painting depicts Ophelia a character in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, singing before she drowns in a river in Denmark. The work is well known for its depiction of the detailed flora of the river and the river bank stressing growth and decay in a natural ecosystem. The painting utilizes bright and intense colors in the landscape to make the pale Ophelia contrast with the nature behind her.

Poetic Moment
Judith Viorst is an American writer, newspaper journalist, and psychoanalysis researcher. She is well known for her humorous observational poetry and children’s books including the Tenth Good Thing About Barney and the Alexander series. In 2011, she received the Foremother Award of a Lifetime Achievement from the National Research Center for Women and Families.
In the poem, “Mother Does Not Want a Dog” by Judith Viorst, the speaker utilizes vivid imagery that conveys a negative image of a dog as a pet in an attempt to rationalize why their mother does not want a pet dog despite their alleged desire to have one. However, towards the end of the poem, we find that the speaker truly wants a snake for a pet and not a dog. This gives the poem an ironic twist.
