Poetic Moment
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson better known as Lewis Carroll is an English writer recognized for his comic fantasies and humorous childlike verses. His poem, “How Doth the Little Crocodile” appears in chapter 2 of his 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The poem describes a crafty crocodile that lures fish into his mouth with a welcoming smile. The work is a parody of the moralistic 1715 poem “Against Idleness and Mischief” by Isaac Watts which uses a bee to model hard work. In Carroll’s parody, the crocodile’s corresponding “virtues” are deception and predation.
