ABC Fall Programs Highlight: Celebrating Fandom Through Fanfiction (7th-12th grade)
Do you have a fandom that you love but wish the story had ended differently? Want to explore your own story and play around in that universe? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop will explore how we can celebrate fandoms we love from books, movies, TV and video games by honing our writing and storytelling skills. Writers will learn how to adapt characters from your favorite fandom to a new and original fictional scene and reimagine what the story could look like. You will also learn about fanfiction communities and about DIY publishing through fanfiction. This workshop will take place weekly on Thursdays in November (1/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2, and 12/9) from 6:30-8:30pm on Zoom. To register, click here.

Art For OWL
Known for painting aspects of America that few other artists addressed, Edward Hopper’s painting October on Cape Cod represents a melancholic autumn landscape. The painting was produced in Hopper’s South Truro studio in 1946 and was based on several pencil studies completed in his car.

Monday: Look at the painting October on Cape Cod. What kind of atmosphere does it have? Write a short story using a setting with a similar atmosphere.

Tuesday: Special prompt from the Scary Stories: Haunted Objects workshop on Tuesdays in October-Look around your home for an object that might be older, shabby or a forgotten gift to you from someone. What is it? Where did it come from? Write a scary story about this object and the secret powers, or curse that might be attached to it.
Martes: Actividad especial del Taller de Cuentos Espantosos los martes en octubre-busca un objeto en tu hogar que puede ser viejo, desgastado o un regaldo olvidado de alguien. ¿Qué es? ¿De dónde vino? Wednesday: Try writing a short story with scenes that are not in chronological order.

Thursday: Write a poem using only words that start with ‘p.’

Friday: What is a pet that you wouldn’t like to have? Write a short passage explaining why.

What we are reading this week
We are proud to recommend An Indigenous People’s History of the United States for Young People by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. This book is perfect for learning the history behind Indigenous People’s Day this past week. It focuses on the colonialism and the historic genocide of indigenous peoples in the US and its effects on native communities today in a way for children to understand. Additionally, it provides maps, images, discussion topics, and sources for further reading to explore this important part of American history.
