ABC Fall Programs Highlight: Ghost Story Workshop
Sometimes the location of a ghost story is as spooky as the ghost itself. Abandoned buildings, cemeteries, dark forests—they all have the ability to create goosebumps even without a monster jumping out. What places do you find creepy? When you picture those places, what do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel? This workshop for 5th-8th grade writers with Carie Juettner, author of The Ghostly Tales of Austin, will explore the power of setting in ghost stories and how to use sensory details for maximum creepiness. Writers will get the chance to write their own ghost stories and share them with the instructor and one another...if they dare! This workshop will take place Saturday, October 9th, 1pm–3pm on Zoom. To register, click here.
New Work from Pandemic’s Labyrinth!
Meet ABC student and author Kayla Hall! Kayla is 14 years old and the author of two beautiful and moving stories featured in Pandemic’s Labyrinth, both exploring themes of friendship, magic, and connection. See below for an excerpt of Kayla’s story “Hello” and help us celebrate this young author! 🧜🏾♀️ #creativecommunity
“Hello,” Iris said. She felt the sand in her shoes poking her feet, but she paid it no mind. She saw the sand, still and peaceful, as waves gently rolled up the beach, and then retreated back into the depths of the ocean. She saw the horizon, the sun burning bright as it fell closer to the waves, ready to disappear into deep blue mysteries of what lies below the surface. But mainly, she stared at the girl sitting on the rock out at sea.
She felt her heart race, as she stared at a sight she thought she’d never see. She lifted her hand to wave at the beautiful mermaid, perched on a rock, staring at her from far away. Her deep blue eyes sparkled like nothing Iris had ever seen. Her dark, brown skin the color of wood, but like the wood of a sunken ship with green moss covering its deck. Her shining green tail was like the color of green seaweed. The mermaid stared out from the rock, just as transfixed as Iris was.
Were humans just as unreal to the mermaid as the mermaid was to Iris? Could their lives be more similar than Iris could’ve ever thought? Could she tell Iris the mysterious mysteries of the depths, and reveal all of its beautiful secrets to her? Or . . . maybe . . . was the mermaid just as lonely as Iris was in this new place—her whole life uprooted and moved, her old friends miles and miles away?”
Art For OWL
Arpilleras(burlap) are brightly colored patchworks made predominantly by groups of women. Their construction became popular in Chile during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-90). The production of Arpilleras provided a vital source of income for the arpilleristas, many of whom had been left in a state of financial insecurity due to widespread unemployment and forced disappearances of their husbands and children, who became known as desaparecidos or the disappeared. The scenes served to denounce human rights violations during the Pinochet regime.
The arpillera seen above depicts how the dictatorship limited freedom of expression and press and the repression and surveillance journalists faced.

What we are reading this week
In honor of the beginning of Latinx Heritage Month celebrating Latinx and Latin American writers and creators, we are pleased to recommend a new book, Loteria, out now from Karla Arenas Valenti and illustrated by Dana Sammar. In this story about eleven-year-old Clara, Life and Death deal the Lotería cards. Every card reveals a new twist in Clara's fate--a scorpion, an arrow, a blood-red rose. If Life wins, Clara will live to a ripe old age. If Death prevails, she'll flicker out like a candle.
But Clara knows none of this. All she knows is that her young cousin Esteban has vanished, and she'll do whatever it takes to save him, traveling to the mythical Kingdom of Las Pozas, where every action has a price, and every choice has consequences. And though it seems her fate is sealed, Clara just might have what it takes to shatter the game and choose a new path.
Karla Arenas Valenti weaves an adventure steeped in magic and mythology--gorgeously illustrated by Dana Sanmar--exploring the notion of free will in a world where fate holds all the cards.
