ABC Fall Programs Highlight: The Novel In Verse-Poetry as Prose
What exactly is a novel in verse, and where does it begin? What distinguishes a novel in verse from one written in prose? What are the elements of poetry, and what role do they play in this form? What poetic elements make a novel in verse interesting or powerful? This workshop will help young writers (8th-12th grade) better understand the basics of poetry and how poems can be used to tell a story. We'll explore character development, setting and plot through the lens of poetry and poetic devices. We will read novels in verse and identify what makes them different from prose novels. We will also spend time writing and discussing our own drafts of poems that could become a novel in verse. Even if you've never written a poem in your life before, this workshop will provide you with the knowledge and tools to do so. And you will come away with a better sense for how to tell a complete story with compelling characters using poetry.
If you are available and interested in participating in this program, please RSVP by emailing ABC’s Regional Program Manager, Leticia at leticia@austinbatcave.org to secure your spot! Once you do, we will send you the Zoom link and additional information prior to the workshop.
