New Work from the ABC Anthology, Pandemic’s Labyrinth!
Meet Jessica Cohen, one of the talented op-ed writers featured in Pandemic’s Labyrinth! Jessica attended ABC’s annual journalism and activism workshop, For the Record, and wrote a piece titled “To Mask or Not to Mask?” that remains quite relevant today! Check out an excerpt from Jessica’s op-ed below and help us celebrate this young author:
"As a fifteen-year-old only child who hasn’t seen friends or family in over a year, and who has basically lived my life on Zoom, I get the toll that this pandemic has taken on so many—mentally and physically. I too have been frustrated beyond belief as our elected officials, locally, statewide, and federally, have given us mixed signals—one day wear a mask, the next day don’t— when in fact, masks and social distancing are supposed to be one of the most important aspects of our lives to get rid of this pandemic. […] Ultimately, the fate of so many of our neighbors, our friends, and our families depends on your actions. I have allergies and asthma, and even though most young people my age won’t get unbearably sick, at least in the short term, I could potentially end up in an ICU, alone. Please be smart. For me, and for you. By masking, social distancing, and avoiding crowds, we can perhaps prevent another year of missed-out life for those of all ages. I missed out on so much last year, such as hugging my friends, seeing my grandma and uncle in NYC, and just getting to be a kid. For the sake of all of us and our country, please just wear a mask. It’s not that complicated.”
Art For OWL
This portrait Michelle Obama was created in 2018 by painter Amy Sherald. The portrait celebrates Michelle Obama, the former first lady of the United States and the wife of the 44th president, Barack Obama. From the Smithsonian Museum, here is a description of the making of this painting: “Painted using the artist Amy Sherald’s signature grayscale, Mrs. Obama’s unnaturally colored skin asks us to consider both her race and her humanity. While the use of gray in lieu of more natural skin tones reduces the reference to her race, the blunt removal also draws attention to her skin color, highlighting her racial identity. The gray tones, in particular, reference nineteenth-century photographic traditions, wherein the emerging photographic medium allowed free African Americans to celebrate themselves and craft their own unique (and positive) identities. Dominating the composition is Mrs. Obama’s monumental dress. Designed by Michelle Smith, for her label Milly, and selected for the portrait by Mrs. Obama, Sherald, and Mrs. Obama’s stylist, the dress is symbolic, referencing the former first lady’s modernity and approachability. While the dress was originally designed by Smith with modern art, such as Pop and Op art, in mind, Sherald recognized its visual affinities with the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The quilts of Gee’s Bend, a remote black community of the descendants of former slaves, are bold and improvisational, and reference the independence and resourcefulness of the African American experience.” The painting hangs in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian. Here is a link to learn more about the painting and some resources for discussing and writing about it.
