Author spotlight: Eric Carle
This week we wanted to celebrate the life and work of author and illustrator, Eric Carle, who died last week at the age of 91. Eric Carle wrote and illustrated such beloved children’s books as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Rainbow Fish, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and many more books that have been translated into multiple languages for families to enjoy! If you haven’t read any of his books yet, or want to revisit an old favorite, now is the time, and let us know in the comments what your favorite Eric Carle book is.

Austin Bat Cave Presents: Courageous Cadence!
Courageous Cadence: A Performing Justice Project is a spoken word poetry action-residency in which students Black, Indigenous, and Youth of Color in 8th-12th grade can come together to make meaning around race and gender (in)justices. Led by Jasmine Games and Quinn Wozniak, this residency is a space for youth to play games, participate in discussions and activities, and write creatively in response to various prompts and topics. We enthusiastically encourage trans, queer, and neurodivergent BIPOC youth to apply. We welcome youth of all levels of experience with spoken word poetry and theatre to apply for this free residency. Whether you are someone who writes and performs frequently or someone who has never written a poem before, we believe that you are an important part of the community we hope to build together. This residency is completely free and online through Zoom on July 5th–16th,
11am–1pm each day; Final Performance on July 17th at 7pm. Join us as we find the rhyme in resistance and make a stand! Register here.
Courageous Cadence: A Performing Justice Project es una acción-residencia de poesía oral en la que los estudiantes Afrodescendientes, indígenas y jóvenes de color en los grados 8 al 12 pueden unirse para dar sentido a la raza y el género (en) los jueces. Dirigida por Jasmine Games y Quinn Wozniak, esta residencia es un espacio para que los jóvenes jueguen, participen en debates y actividades, y escriban de forma creativa en respuesta a diversas indicaciones y temas. Art For OWL
The Persistence of Memory, also known as Los relojes blandos (the soft clocks) or Los relojes derretidos (the melted clocks) is a 1931 painting by Spanish artist Salvador Dalí and one of the most recognizable works of Surrealism. Dalí would later return to the theme of this painting with the variation The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory in 1954.

Writing activities to try at home this week
Actividades de escritura para usar en casa esta semana
Monday: Imagine you are on a plane bound for a family vacation. Suddenly, a storm rocks and shakes the plane violently. The pilot manages to get the plane back under control but has to make an emergency landing. When the plane is safely settled and the doors are opened, you find you all have landed in a magical world. Describe the world you see and how you would get back home.
Lunes: Imagina que estás en un avión con destino a unas vacaciones familiares. De repente, una tormenta sacude y sacude violentamente el avión. El piloto logra recuperar el control del avión, pero debe realizar un aterrizaje de emergencia. Tuesday: If you could fix one thing about your neighborhood, what would it be? A new park? A new library? Write a short essay about what you would fix and why. Who would this repair benefit most?

Wednesday: Do you have a favorite relative, friend, or someone else in your life , such as a teacher? Write a note of thanks to them describing how much they mean to you. If you'd like, share this description with them.

What we are reading this week
We are proud to recommend The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh. It is set in 1872 New Orleans. Brimming with magic, darkness, and romance this book will draw you in with its lyrical writing and keep you reading with its mystery. It follows Celine, an immigrant from Paris, as she attempts to discover who is behind the series of murders occurring in the carnival season. It is great for young adult readers.
