Community Resources
A note from Austin Bat Cave to our community:
This week we at Austin Bat Cave are finding it difficult to navigate the myriad of feelings about the overwhelming number of lives lost in our country due to gun violence, mass shootings and police brutality. We are thinking about the families of Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Makhia Bryant, the families of those killed in the shooting at the Indianapolis FedEx, the shootings last month in Georgia targeting Asian and Asian American women, and now on Sunday, a shooting in Austin ending in the deaths of three people—Willie Simmons III, Alyssa Broderick and Amanda Broderick, two of whom were students at Elgin High School.
It feels insurmountable at times like these to grieve the loss of life, especially of youth in our communities, and to consider what we can do as community members, even if we did not personally know those killed, to support the grieving families and work towards a safer, more just world for us all now, and for future generations.
Our mission at Austin Bat Cave is to help students to tell their stories, whatever those stories may be. In one of our programs in Del Valle ISD, students spoke this week about the idea that kids are the future, but adults, and our society at large, do not support them in that promise, and that kids have to act now to make change. This idea feels pertinent more than ever now, as we remember that after every mass shooting, after every instance of police brutality, after every instance of gun violence in which lives are lost, community is there to build and support, and youth are there to make their voices known, whether people in power want to acknowledge them or not.
As an organization, we will continue to reflect, plan and implement programs that support youth voices and aid them in doing the important work of speaking out now, and of expressing their stories now to affect change.
We wanted to share some resources that are being offered to community members:
Therapeutic resources
Free & low-cost counseling at LifeWorks Austin
If you have felt out of sorts, confused, preoccupied, extra stressed, scared, lonely, anxious, isolated, or just feel like talking with someone about the challenges you are facing, you can call the YWCA’s Warmline or join a WarmZoom. Their caring trained team offers non-judgmental and confidential support.
Writing/journaling resources

Other tips on journaling
If you would like to continue to affect change in the local Austin community, be sure to know who your city council members are and continue to be a part of the conversation around reimagining public safety in Austin (resources from Grassroots Leadership and the City of Austin). In addition, if you are looking to grow your journalism skills and make your voice heard, here are some tips on writing op-eds. The Texas Observer is currently looking for pitches for essays and editorial work!
Early voting ends on Tuesday April 27th, and Election Day is Saturday May 1st. If you live in Travis County you can vote at any polling site.
Bring your essentials:
A voting guide or sample ballot,
Valid, state-issued ID,
Hand sanitizer and mask.
Propositions at a Glance
Prop A: Charter amendment allowing the Austin Firefighters Association to force the city into binding arbitration if they reach an impasse in collective bargaining.
Prop B: Code amendment prohibiting public camping, in addition to sitting or lying down on a public sidewalk or sleeping outdoors in and near Downtown and the UT-Austin area.
Prop C: Charter amendment permitting City Council to appoint or remove the Director of the Office of Police Oversight.
Prop D: Charter amendment moving Austin’s mayoral election to presidential election years.
Prop E: Charter amendment creating ranked-choice voting for city elections. If passed, voters would rank candidates instead of voting for just one candidate.
Prop F: Charter amendment changing Austin’s form of government from “council-manager” to “mayor-council,” also known as “strong mayor.” If passed, this would eliminate the city manager position; the mayor would not have a vote on Council but would have the authority to veto Council decisions.
Prop G: Charter amendment creating an 11th City Council district. Because the mayor would be rendered a non-voting member of Council if Prop F passed (see above), an 11th single-member district was proposed in an effort to avoid potential 5-5 deadlocks on Council. However, because Prop G is a standalone proposition, it is not dependent on Prop F’s passage or failure.
Prop H: Charter amendment creating a so-called “Democracy Dollars” public campaign finance program that, if passed, would provide up to two $25 vouchers to every registered voter who could then contribute them to candidates for city office.

The OWL Pen Pal Program Returns!
We are bringing back the OWL Pen Pal Program for the Summer of 2021. While we continue to practice social distancing, seniors are particularly vulnerable to isolation and loneliness, thus impacting their immunity and mental health. Austin Bat Cave's OWL Pen Pal Program connects and matches young people with senior citizens in the greater Austin area through a digital pen pal program that fosters meaningful connections between generations and helps build empathy for participants.
This program is ideal for young writers (age 10-18) with strong reading and writing skills, who are able to work independently and are self-motivated (they will be responsible for corresponding with seniors in their community), and who are interested in learning from and engaging with their senior pen pal. This program will run from early May-the second week of September. If you are interested in being a pen pal, sign up today!
Art for OWL
Le cirque rouge et bleu by Marc Chagall (1969-1973) forms part of a private collection and is a bold example of the artist’s fascination with the circus world. For Chagall, the circus was a place of inspiration, “as disturbing as it (was) profound.” Several of his works depict clowns, bareback riders, and acrobats.
