Don’t forget to submit work to the Spring Writing Contest-Deadline is this Friday, March 12th!
Austin Bat Cave has extended the deadline for our Spring Writing Contest with Austin Family Magazine for students in the local Austin area (and beyond). The theme for this contest is Choose or Create Your Own Adventure!
This contest is open to students from 2nd-6th grade writers and 7-12th grade and to all genres of writing related to this theme. Young writers can also write in English, Spanish or both!
Our guest judges are authors Natalia Sylvester and Nick Solis will be choosing the first place winners and finalists in each age group, whose work will be published on the Austin Family Magazine website, in the Austin Bat Cave Anthology and the OWL newsletter.
The contest closes on March 12th, so be sure to submit!

Austin Bat Cave ha extendido la fecha límite para nuestro Concurso de Escritura de Primaveracon la revista Austin Family para estudiantes en el área local de Austin (y más allá). El tema de este concurso es ¡Elige o crea tu propia aventura!
Este concurso está abierto a estudiantes de escritores de 2º a 6º grado y de 7º a 12º grado ya todos los géneros de escritura relacionados con este tema. ¡Los escritores jóvenes también pueden escribir en inglés, español o ambos! Nuestros jueces invitados son los autores Natalia Sylvester y Nick Solis elegirán a los ganadores y finalistas del primer lugar en cada grupo de edad, cuyo trabajo se publicará en el sitio web de Austin Family Magazine, en Austin Bat Cave Anthology y en el boletín OWL.

Austin Bat Cave Upcoming Workshops: For the Record
There is still time for youth in the area (and outside of Austin) to register for one of our most exciting upcoming virtual workshop opportunities, For the Record. This is a 3-day op-ed workshop taught by professional journalists. Students in 9th-12th grade will learn the art of opinion writing and craft a short op-ed on a social or political issue that is important to them. Students will work with instructors to pitch their op-eds to media outlets for publication. Journalist guest speakers to be announced in February! This workshop is March 15th–17th, 12pm–3pm each day on Zoom. Register here!

Writing activities to try at home this week:

Monday: Write a passage detailing your earliest memory.

Thursday: Write a short story about someone who is lost at sea. What kind of ideas do they come up with to overcome their problem?

What we are reading this week:
We are proud to recommend The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. It is a young adult book filled with magic, faeries, and adventure. Following the daring main character, Jude Duarte, the story explores life in Fairieland. With heartbreak, betrayal, and love around every turn, this book is impossible to put down.
