Spring Writing Contest with Austin Bat Cave and Austin Family Magazine!
Austin Bat Cave is excited to announce that we have teamed up with Austin Family Magazine to hold a Spring Writing Contest for students in the local Austin area (and beyond). The theme for this contest is Choose or Create Your Own Adventure!
This contest is open to students from 2nd-6th grade writers and 7-12th grade and to all genres of writing related to this theme. Young writers can also write in English, Spanish or both!
Our guest judges are authors Natalia Sylvester and Nick Solis will be choosing the first place winners and finalists in each age group, whose work will be published on the Austin Family Magazine website, in the Austin Bat Cave Anthology and the OWL newsletter.
The contest opens this week and closes on February 26th, so be sure to submit!
¡Concurso de Escritura de Primavera con Austin Bat Cave y Austin Family Magazine!
Austin Bat Cave se complace en anunciar que nos hemos asociado con Austin Family Magazine para realizar un Concurso de Escritura de Primavera para estudiantes en el área local de Austin (y más allá). El tema de este concurso es ¡Elige o crea tu propia aventura!
Este concurso está abierto a estudiantes de escritores de 2º a 6º grado y de 7º a 12º grado ya todos los géneros de escritura relacionados con este tema. ¡Los escritores jóvenes también pueden escribir en inglés, español o ambos! Nuestros jueces invitados son los autores Natalia Sylvester y Nick Solis elegirán a los ganadores y finalistas del primer lugar en cada grupo de edad, cuyo trabajo se publicará en el sitio web de Austin Family Magazine, en Austin Bat Cave Anthology y en el boletín OWL.

Austin Bat Cave Upcoming Workshops!
Austin Bat Cave will be offering virtual writing workshops all throughout 2021! From a D&D club to a Live Write-in and Author Visit with Sheela Charli, there are numerous opportunities to virtually immerse yourself in creative writing.
Our Fantasy Writing Workshop on Feb 15th-19th, 5-6:30pm is coming up and there are some spots left! This workshop is for writers in 6th-12th grade who want to write fantastical fiction (Think The Hobbit, ThePercy Jackson Series or Children of Blood and Bone), including novels, short stories and more! Students will design and create their fantastical worlds, develop their characters and will write stories that transport the reader. Over the course of the workshop, students will complete at least one short story or scene and showcase their work. Register here!

Student Art for the OWL!
This is “What Do You See?” by Joanna Wei, a senior from Hopkins School. The sketch depicts fear through a distorted human figure. The viewer should think of the emotional effects of distorting the human figure and the wide range of emotions the figure can represent.

Monday: Look at the art piece “What Do You See?” What do you think the hands in the painting represent? How do you think the person behind the hands is feeling, and why?

What we are reading this week:
We are proud to recommend Where the Wild Things Are illustrated and written by Maurice Sendak. A famous children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are is fun and imaginative. It follows the adventure of a little boy who travels into a world with monsters and tames them. He becomes their king and decrees that there shall be no rules. However, even amidst the fun, the little boy misses his mother and returns home. An exciting story about love, anger, and mischief, Where the Wild Things Are is great for young children and has beautiful pictures to keep them entertained.
