A Note to Austin Bat Cave Students
After we watched with horror the insurrection in Washington D.C. on January 6th, we thought of you, our ABC student community, and how we can support you during this difficult time.
In particular, we are thinking of our students who are Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color, womxn, immigrants, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and anyone who felt harmed by the violent, racist, and hateful symbols the rioters carried through our Capitol.
Although this recent attempted coup in the nation’s capital was, we hope, a one-time event, the culture that enabled such an event—white supremacy—is a pervasive one. We know this and promise you that we won’t ignore it and the effect that it has on you. We also will not ignore the ways that police continue to have different standards and treatment for White people and Black, Indigenous, and people of color in this country. You have told us this through your writing time and time again. We believe you and hear you.
Austin Bat Cave is focused on justice, specifically anti-racism, and always learning how to improve our practices. We are currently focusing on the following key initiatives:
Providing anti-racist trainings for all of our adults: volunteers, staff, and board
Developing a strategic plan focused solely on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Forming a DEI board committee responsible for identifying gaps within ABC's DEI efforts and advocating for solutions
Following hiring and recruiting practices that reflect our commitment to a diverse workplace
Building strong relationships with other DEI committed organizations within the community of Austin
Providing writing workshops on activism and advocacy for Austin youth
At Austin Bat Cave, we want all 1000+ of you to know that your voice and story will never be silenced by hate. We want you to know that we stand with you and because of you.
When you see images of hate flaunted and celebrated, it is our mission and our work at ABC to listen to your responses, help you process them through writing and storytelling, and if you so desire, illuminate the path so that you can be the architects of just futures.
Do you have something to say about these events? Do you have a story to share? Do you want people to know or just to process it? We are here. Tell us.
Additionally, if you want to write about this event and get your thoughts out there, here is a prompt to get you started:
Austin Bat Cave wholeheartedly denounces the violent attacks on the Capitol and the efforts to subvert America’s democracy. We hope our country can both heal from the actions of white supremacists and support all people of color with kindness. Tell us how you are processing the events; you can write about how you felt as a citizen watching the turmoil of our country.
Finally, if you are in need of support, please see the resource list below.
With admiration and support of you, ABC students,

Writing activities to try at home this week:
Monday: Imagine you are a barber, and one of your clients asks you to do whatever hairstyle you would like on them, in any color. Write a poem about what haircut you would give them, and make sure to be descriptive about what it looks like!
Tuesday: Take a good look at this painting, The Gulf Stream by Winslow Home (1899). What do you think is happening, and how is the man on the boat feeling? Keep these things in mind, and try writing a short passage or poem based on the painting. Put yourself into the painter, or the subject’s point of view.
Wednesday: Demigods are half-god, half-human beings. Write a story about a demigod who is on a quest to defeat a monster. Here’s a tip: demigods usually have powers related to their godly parent, so if your demigod’s father is Apollo, the Greek god of music, they might have a magical instrument as their weapon. It might help to look up a list of gods and goddesses from different cultures (Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and many more!) as well.
Thursday: Write a short story that ends with “That was a wild ride.”
Friday: We all have our favorite subjects in school, but also our least favorites. Pick one subject that you don’t enjoy and write a passage about how you would make it more interesting. For example, if you don’t like math class, you could write about adding puzzles or fun games that would make it more interesting.
Saturday: Use the writing prompt in the letter from Austin Bat Cave above to navigate your feelings about the events at the US capitol on Jan. 6th.
UU. El 6 de enero.
Sunday: Have you ever taken care of a pet? If you have, write a poem about a good memory you have with them. If you haven’t, write a poem about what kind of pet you’d like to have, and what activities you’d like to do with them.
domingo: ¿Has cuidado alguna vez a una mascota?
