Student poem from the OWL!
¡Poema estudiantil del OWL!
We are very excited to begin 2021 with a beautiful and hopeful poem from Isla F, who submitted to the OWL Newsletter. Isla is a 17 year old student from Austin, Texas! About her inspiration for this poem, Isla said, “I was inspired to write this poem partially because of COVID-19 and this seemingly neverending lockdown, but specifically, because the couple I babysit for are expecting their second child and my next-door neighbors had their second child about a month ago. I found it amazing that while so many are sick and dying, life still persists. We're such social creatures and I think that that, combined with our ingenuity, are some of our most valuable traits.” We have featured part of her work above, but check out her full poem, The Shiny New, here.
If you have a poem, story, artwork or other writing that you would like to share with us, we would love to receive submissions from subscribers and ABC students for us to share. Please fill out this form in order to have your piece featured on the next Dispatch from the Bat Mobile and in the next issue of the OWL Newsletter!

What we are reading this week:
Lo que estamos leyendo esta semana
We are proud to recommend Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibanez this week! Ximena has spent most of her life as a decoy for the Condesa, the rightful but deposed queen of Inkasisa. They live in exile with their fellow Illustrians, forced to flee when a usurper king uses the magic of a dark relic to drive them out of their homes and make way for his own people, the Llascans. After years of pretending to be the Condesa and taking the brunt of her people's frustration and anger, Ximena hardly knows who she really is anymore. Her one solace is her magic — her ability to weave moonlight into beautiful tapestries.
When the usurper king sends an order that the Condesa must marry him or else face the final destruction of her people, Ximena has no choice but to return to the home she fled and offer herself to the king in the Condesa's place, never letting on that the real Condesa is still safely hidden away. But getting close to the king has its benefits. It brings Ximena closer to the relic that allowed the king to defeat the Illustrians. If she can find it, perhaps she can use it to crush him and return the real Condesa to her rightful place.
