What’s new at the OWL?
The Texas Book Festival Fresh Ink Contest is back! The deadline is coming up on September 14th to submit your short fiction, so get those stories polished up and ready to go.
All students in grades 6-12th grade can submit a story if they live in Texas and submit a story that is no more than 2,000 words. Those who submit a story will have the opportunity to participate in a free workshop and Q&A with experience writers! Learn more about the contest and how to submit here.

Art For OWL
“In the North, the Negro had Better Educational Facilities” is part of Harlem Renaissance artist, Jacob Lawrence’s The Migration Series. The painting emphasizes the importance of education and growth, especially for girls while contrasting it with the few opportunities African American children had in the south. The series contains sixty panels where Lawrence uses vibrant patterns, blocks of color, and angular figures and forms to tell a clear story of a historic event.

Writing activities to try at home this week

Monday: Look at the painting In the North, the Negro had Better Educational Facilities. Write a short passage explaining why you think the artist chose the colors that he did.

Tuesday: Try writing a short story that involves the following items: a gumball machine, a pair of pink socks, and a broken lamp.

Wednesday: Write a poem that has stanzas composed of three lines each. These three-line stanzas are called ‘tercets’.
