May is Mental Health Month!
Mental Health Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about trauma and the impact it can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children and families. This edition of the OWL would like to focus on resources and activities that help reduce misconceptions about mental health issues and encourage those who suffer to talk about them.

El Mes de la consientización sobre la Salud Mental brinda la oportunidad de crear conciencia sobre el trauma y el impacto que puede tener en el bienestar físico, emocional y mental de los niños y las familias. Esta edición del OWL se enfocará en recursos y actividades que ayuden a reducir los conceptos erróneos sobre los problemas de salud mental y alentar a quienes los padecen a hablar sobre ellos.

For the Love of Fandom: A Fanfiction/Cosplay Camp
June 27th–July 1st, 1 pm–4 pm each day; In-person at the Bat Cave (1210 Rosewood Ave)
If you have a fandom you love, but wish the ending had been different, this summer camp is just for you! This camp will explore how we can celebrate fandoms we love from books, movies, TV, and video games by honing our writing and storytelling skills. Writers will also learn about fanfiction communities and about DIY publishing through fanfiction. Plan your best character to cosplay and sign up today!

Tiger, Shark, and Me Sit Down for Tea by Emma Haddow, depicts the artist’s struggle with anxiety and depression. The painting was a submission made to @perspectiveartproject - an initiative taking stigmas surrounding mental illness using art and creativity.

Writing activities to try at home this week

Monday: Look at the painting Tiger, Shark, and Me Sit Down for Tea. What emotions or ideas do you think the artist is trying to convey through the figures pictured?
Lunes: Mira la pintura, Tiger, Shark and Me Stit Down for Tea (El tigre, el tiburón y yo nos sentamos a tomar el té). ¿Qué emociones o ideas crees que el artista está tratando de transmitir a través de las figuras representadas?
Tuesday: Write a short story that explores the inner conflict of the narrator. Rather than focusing on what is causing the conflict, try to be descriptive as possible about the narrator’s emotions.
Martes: Escribe un cuento corto que explore el conflicto interno del narrador. En lugar de centrarse en lo que está causando el conflicto, trate de ser lo más descriptivo posible sobre las emociones del narrador.
Wednesday: What are some things you do to calm down or relieve stress? Try writing a poem that describes them creatively.

Thursday: Write a story beginning with, “Take it slow.”

What we are reading this week
We are proud to recommend Turtles All the Way Down by John Green for Mental Health Awareness Month. This young adult book follows Aza as she and her friends explore a billionaire's disappearance for a hundred-thousand-dollar stake. However, Aza struggles with trying to be a good daughter, friend, and student while her thoughts tighten in.
