Poetic Moment
Meg Day grew up in California’s Bay Area, she is the author of Last Psalm at Sea Level and winner of the Publishing Triangle’s Audre Lorde Award. Her poem, “Batter My Heart, Transgender’d God” is a powerful and haunting hymn that illustrates the oppression and violence of transgendered people in the form of a prayer. In the poem, the speaker begs for fear to be placed in “my heart” for “faith has grown my senses dull.” The sonnet reminds readers that transgendered people are often left out of any notion of better.
