Our organization strives to serve the greater Austin, Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, San Marcos and Round Rock communities by providing creative writing activities and ideas that you and your kiddos can use at home to keep their creativity going!

Community resources
SEAT Advocacy Day—where Texas students convene at the Texas State Capitol to make their voices heard during the biennial meeting of lawmakers—is happening on Monday, April 21st. The organization encourages young people to fill out the interest form if intrigued! Transportation will be provided, and there is no cost for attendees. While there, you can expect to meet with lawmakers, sharpen advocacy skills, promote policy solutions, witness floor proceedings, tour the state capitol building, and celebrate the movement.
Check out this Flash Forward Fables teen writing contest organized by Obstreperous Ostrich, which sells necklaces, key rings, and bookmarks and is celebrating its sixth birthday party. They are looking for flash fiction stories—less than 1,500 words—that combine science fiction and fables. Participants must be ages 13 to 19, and the deadline is March 1st. Their website has more information if you or a teen you know is interested!
Illustoria is a print magazine for creative kids filled with inspiring content, such as youth writing, comics, DIY projects, and more. They are looking to publish the writing of young authors. To submit your work, please follow the instructions on their FAQ page. The information for the dates and prompt are below:

Prompt: Imagine that scientists have discovered a substance that will magnify the size of anything. A drop of it accidentally lands on a bug, and hours later, the insect expands until it’s the size of a cow….or even the Empire State Building! Where in the world is this happening, and what happens next?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was on Monday, January 20th, is a tribute to the life and achievements of King. He was pivotal in the Civil Rights Movement, leading the charge against racial discrimination and advocating for equality for all, regardless of skin color. King's powerful words, 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,' continue to resonate with us.

Cesar Chavez St. in Austin, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (known as the Queen of Tejano) is paired with colorful Loteria Cards to honor the deep-rooted Hispanic culture and history in East Austin. This mural is a fun, different way to explore art—showing that art comes in all shapes and sizes!

What we’re reading this week:
Child of the Civil Rights Movement by Paula Young Shelton and Raul Colón
Paula grew up in the deep south, surrounded by inequality. With a community of prominent leaders around her, including Uncle Martin (Martin Luther King), Paula watched and listened to the struggles, eventually joining with her family—and thousands of others—in the historic march from Selma to Montgomery. This picture book introduces children to the Civil Rights Movement and is best for ages four to seven, but everyone can enjoy and learn from it.
