Austin Bat Cave is a creative community. Our writing programs empower students to find their voices and tell their stories. Our organization strives to serve the greater Austin, Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, San Marcos and Round Rock communities by providing creative writing activities and ideas that you and your kiddos can use at home to keep their creativity going!

Imagine a world where our kids aren’t allowed to be creative. A world filled with AI and anxiety, with no room for kids to choose their own path or tell their own story. A world where young people’s voices, desires, and concerns are ignored and discarded.

At Austin Bat Cave, we’re on a mission to help young people imagine different and better worlds, connect with each other around their own challenges, and ignite a creative spark that will shape who they are in the future.

In 2025, we will continue to support our students with high-quality programming that supports their mental well-being and creativity, especially for those students whose voices need to be heard and amplified most right now. Imagina un mundo en el que a nuestros niños no se les permita ser creativos. Un mundo lleno de inteligencia artificial y ansiedad, sin espacio para que los niños elijan su propio camino o cuenten su propia historia. • Check out the upcoming BRAVE Communities Connection - Preserving Black Austin History on Sunday, February 23rd, 2-5pm (doors open at 1:30pm) at Greater Mt. Zion Church (Adult Assembly Room). It will be a fun, educational, cross cultural and intergenerational community building event with:

  • Panel and roundtable discussions

  • Spoken word

  • Historical timeline

  • UNO tournament

  • Children's corner

  • Community Marketplace

  • Refreshments and networking

• SEAT Advocacy Day—a chance for Texas students to gather at the Texas State Capitol and make their voices heard during the legislature’s biennial session—is set for Monday, April 21st. The organization invites you to fill out the registration form if you plan on going! Transportation is provided, and attendance is completely free. During the event, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with lawmakers, refine your advocacy skills, champion policy solutions, observe floor proceedings, tour the capitol, and celebrate the movement.

• Don’t miss the Flash Forward Fables teen writing contest hosted by Obstreperous Ostrich to celebrate its sixth anniversary! Known for its unique necklaces, key rings, and bookmarks, the organization is seeking flash fiction stories—1,500 words or fewer—that blend science fiction with fables. The contest is open to writers ages 13 to 19, with a submission deadline of March 15th. If you or a teen you know is interested, visit their website for more details!

• Illustoria is a print magazine for creative kids filled with inspiring content, such as youth writing, comics, DIY projects, and more. They are looking to publish the writing of young authors. To submit your work, please follow the instructions on their FAQ page. The information for the dates and prompt are below:

What we’re looking for: Short stories with 600 words max

Prompt: Imagine that scientists have discovered a substance that will magnify the size of anything. A drop of it accidentally lands on a bug, and hours later, the insect expands until it’s the size of a cow….or even the Empire State Building! Where in the world is this happening, and what happens next?

• New neighborhood residents are invited by their friendly neighbors to a Halloween party. Except...the neighbors are vampires! What will happen next? What other creatures are at this party?

Quote of the week

Maya Angelou was an author, civil rights activist, and poet (among many other things!). Since February is Black History Month, we are highlighting her impact on the world. Her quote, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you,” is from one of her most famous books, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” Have you ever felt that way? What stories are bursting out of you?

Jean-Michel Basquiat was an African-American artist who became a cultural icon of the 1980s New York art scene. His work combined graffiti and abstract art, creating an interesting art style all on its own. This untitled painting was one of a handful that took Basquiat months to make—his others were usually completed in the span of a few days.

What we’re reading this week:

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster by Jonathan Auxier

For nearly a century, Victorian London relied on "climbing boys"—orphans owned by chimney sweeps—to clean flues and protect homes from fire. Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived—and a girl. When Nan gets stuck in a chimney fire, she fears the end has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself unharmed in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature—a golem—made from soot and ash that saved her. This heartfelt middle-grade book is perfect for kids ten to thirteen but can be read aloud to all ages.
