Our organization strives to serve the greater Austin, Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, San Marcos and Round Rock communities by providing creative writing activities and ideas that you and your kiddos can use at home to keep their creativity going!

Austin Bat Cave’s summer camps are here!

We are so excited to announce our 2025 summer camps. ABC is offering a variety of camps for all ages in June related to our next Anthology theme: Magic! From Myths and Legends camp to Choose Your Own Adventure camp, there’s a little storytelling magic for everyone. We hope you’ll be able to join and let our students enchant you with their creativity! These camps will take place at the African American Youth Harvest Foundation offices on East 290 and are offered on a sliding scale to make them accessible for all families. Register your young writer here!

We are so excited to announce our first ever Fantasy Book Faire scheduled on May 10th, 2025, from 1-4 pm at The Vortex! Bring your favorite fantasy costumes and an appetite for fun, as we will be gifting books and leading literacy events in a fantastic setting provided by The Vortex. Author Miguel Briones and a slew of performers will dazzle and entertain, and in Austin Bat Cave fashion, we will have books to give away to youth and teens of all ages!

Come and have fun with us at this free event! In addition to the books we will give away to the youth, we will have games and story times, music, and costumed shenanigans! While we encourage you to come dressed in your best fantasy outfit, no one will be turned away for lack of a princess crown or knight shield.

You are invited to bring books in good condition that you are ready to say goodbye to - we will ensure they find a new home! Let us know if you can make it here!

• Calling all YA readers aged 13-18! Want to read books before they release? Want to interview your favorite author? How about getting a discount at the biggest indie bookstore in Texas? Apply to join the Teen Press Corps today! The program runs from June to May, and you would meet monthly at BookPeople. You will write recommendation cards that will be featured at the store, reviews that will be featured on the TPC website, and your content will be featured on BookPeople’s Instagram! • Illustoria is a print magazine for creative kids filled with inspiring content, such as youth writing, comics, DIY projects, and more. They are looking to publish the writing of young authors. Prompt: Think of your favorite dessert and write in the style of a Greek myth….a fictitious tale about how this DESSERT came to be. Borrow mythological details: which gods or goddesses were involved? Feel free to invent your own deities and creatures. Were there any obstacles in the making of this dessert, any troublemaker characters who got in the way or made it difficult? Did the dessert initially fall into the wrong hands? Who is the dessert intended to be for? Is the dessert meant for any particular kind of celebration?

Stephen King, a famous American author, is known for his many horror novels. In his memoir-style book about writing, he says, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” Books are magical; you can take them with you anywhere, and they can provide hours of fun and learning. Even though King doesn’t directly say it, books also let you enter a whole new world, taking you on adventures beyond your imagination.

Art for OWL

There is a big troll-like structure in a forest with tall, green trees. It is brown, has shoulder-length hair, and is wearing necklaces. It is sitting down with its feet and hands together, creating a small space for people to walk into.

Pease Park in Austin is currently home to a troll made of materials 80% recycled, repurposed, or found. This sculpture, Malin’s Fountain by Thomas Dambo, was completed in March of 2024 and will be in place for 15 years. Malin is installed just north of Kingsbury Commons in a wooded area alongside the Shoal Creek trail.

What we’re reading this month

The Ogress and the Orphans by Kelly Barnhill

This book cover has a large ogre wearing a dress leaning down to touch the hands of a small child. Between them, it says, “The Ogress and the Orphans.” Near the two’s feet, it has the author’s name, “Kelly Barnhill.”

Stone-in-the-Glen, once a lovely town, has fallen on hard times. The people put their faith in the Mayor, a dazzling fellow who promises he alone can help. After all, he is a famous dragon slayer. (At least, no one has seen a dragon in his presence.) Only the clever children of the Orphan House and the kindly Ogress at the edge of town can see how dire the town’s problems are.

Then, one day, a child goes missing from the Orphan House. At the Mayor’s suggestion, all eyes turn to the Ogress. The Orphans know this can’t be: the Ogress secretly delivers gifts to the people of Stone-in-the-Glen. But how can the Orphans tell the story of the Ogress’s goodness to people who refuse to listen? And how can they make their deluded neighbors see the real villain in their midst? Though a middle-grade book, The Ogress and the Orphans shares an important message suitable for all readers—no matter how young or old.
