What’s new at the OWL?
¿Qué hay de nuevo en el OWL?
Look out for Austin Bat Cave’s upcoming summer camps! We will be adding one or two more in the coming weeks, so keep posted!
Last week to Register for the OWL Pen Pal Program!
We are bringing back the OWL Pen Pal Program for the Summer of 2021. While we continue to practice social distancing, seniors are particularly vulnerable to isolation and loneliness, thus impacting their immunity and mental health. Austin Bat Cave's OWL Pen Pal Program connects and matches young people with senior citizens in the greater Austin area through a digital pen pal program that fosters meaningful connections between generations and helps build empathy for participants.
This program is ideal for young writers (age 10-18) with strong reading and writing skills, who are able to work independently and are self-motivated (they will be responsible for corresponding with seniors in their community), and who are interested in learning from and engaging with their senior pen pal. This program will run from early May-the second week of September. If you are interested in being a pen pal, sign up today (by April 30th)!
The Bat Mobile is Back!
After a year of waiting, the Bat Mobile is finally back and serving students! Last week we did an outdoor classroom visit with 3rd grade students at Barrington Elementary. Students wrote about where they would travel if they were bats and explore the growing mobile library of the Bat Mobile. One student loved the bus so much, she said that she wanted to create a bus like ours so that she could bring books to all her friends!
We hope to do more visits like this throughout the summer, so please reach out if you want us to come and visit your school or students at your organization!
Art for OWL
Sky Blue is an oil painting created in 1940 by Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky during his Great Synthesis period towards the end of his career. The painting was inspired by an old tapestry discovered in Paris, the little creatures give the painting an optimistic air, even though the German occupation had caused Kandinsky and his wife Nina to live withdrawn at their home in Neuilly.
